Valve has acknowledged that it is taking longer than usual to approve games on Steam. In a Steamworks update for developers, the company said its review of a build, which normally takes three to five business days, can currently take up to 12 business days.

The delays are already affecting releases. The independent developers of Food Devils, Wheel Make It and Cubic Earth have publicly said they are waiting to hear back about their games. Some submissions have reportedly gone unanswered for as long as 20 days, with planned release dates passing before the games receive approval.

According to Valve, much of the delay comes from having to review the same games more than once. The company has published a series of checklists to help studios submit builds that pass review on the first attempt. One recommendation is to launch the game through Steam and play it for at least five minutes to check that it works properly.

Cubic Earth shows what such a wait can mean for a small studio. Its developer, structmira, says they have been unable to reach Valve and have no choice but to wait for the review. Speaking to PC Gamer, structmira said the game's trailer had passed 60,000 views on YouTube and Cubic Earth had been added to more than 6,000 wishlists. Now, they say, players are posting complaints on the game's Steam community page, and the promotional momentum has faded.

Valve has not said when it expects review times to return to normal. For now, the new checklists are its announced measure to reduce the need for repeat reviews.
