Blizzard has confirmed that the next StarCraft will not be a live-service game. Unveiled at BlizzCon 2026, the project moves away from the real-time strategy format that defined the franchise in favor of an open-world, narrative-driven shooter.

It is slated for release in 2030, though no more specific date has been announced. The team is expected to reveal more about the series' new direction before then.

Dan Hay, StarCraft's general manager and the game's creative director, described it as a self-contained experience. Players will be able to create their own character, choose a name and follow their journey through a campaign with a beginning, middle and end.

Blizzard does not plan to build the narrative through seasons or post-launch content to bring the story to its conclusion. Hay said the world will be freely explorable, but the story will have a definitive ending, in the style of a standalone game.

The new StarCraft will feature main missions, side activities and progression for the player-controlled character. Although it is far removed from the classic RTS formula, Blizzard says it intends to preserve core elements of the series, including its science-fiction universe, conflicts and storytelling.

Senior producer Paul Lee linked the shift to the range of genres that have found audiences among games made by South Korean studios, citing Lies of P, Stellar Blade, Crimson Desert and Dave the Diver. In his view, StarCraft's story and conflicts can connect different generations of players, even in a shooter experience.
