GTA 6’s map will open up for exploration relatively early in the campaign. Rockstar has confirmed that players won’t have to work through a long stretch of the story before they can travel around Leonida, the state that includes Vice City.

That marks a departure from GTA 4, where police roadblocks on Liberty City’s bridges kept parts of the map off-limits until Niko progressed through the story. GTA 5 took a different approach: once the tutorials were over, players could travel freely across the map. GTA 6’s approach to exploration appears closer to the latter.

That does not mean every detail of the game’s structure is clear. Rockstar has confirmed that Leonida opens up relatively early, but has not said exactly when. The campaign will still take the characters to different parts of the map. Players, though, will be able to leave Vice City and explore on their own without waiting for the story to lead them to each region.

There may be plenty to find. Aaron Garbut, co-director of Rockstar North, said he is still discovering new places in Leonida. According to Garbut, GTA 6 has an order of magnitude more interiors than other Rockstar games. He also said those spaces were built by hand, with close attention to detail.

Early access to the map, combined with more interiors, gives players more to explore outside missions. For those who like to stray from the campaign’s path, Leonida should offer more than the destinations marked out by the story. GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; no year is given for that date.
