The live-action Elden Ring film will have a budget of nearly US$ 200 million, according to a new report. That would make it the most expensive production in A24’s history, with the studio handling the adaptation of FromSoftware’s RPG.

The budget marks a considerable increase over previous estimates, which put the cost “well above” US$ 100 million. Until now, A24’s most expensive film was Marty Supreme, with a budget of around US$ 70 million. Civil War, directed by Alex Garland, had an estimated budget of US$ 50 million.

Garland is writing and directing Elden Ring, which is being filmed for an IMAX release. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 3, 2028. The cast includes Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce and Nick Offerman.

Production has also moved to locations in northern Wales. Video filmed at Conwy Castle showed human soldiers stationed on walls and towers, patrolling the area. The sequence may depict events that took place before the Shattering, although the details of the scene have not been confirmed.

The film is described as a partial prequel to the events of the RPG. Even the Dung Eater appears to be part of the production, suggesting that it will include elements familiar to those who know the game.

Released in February 2022, Elden Ring is an open-world action RPG developed by FromSoftware, with its story and world also built through a collaboration with George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire. The film will arrive in theaters in 2028.
