Capcom is already thinking about what it will do once the Resident Evil remakes catch up with the series’ more recent games. Jun Takeuchi, a longtime Capcom veteran who has served as the franchise’s executive producer for the past decade, said Resident Evil 7 represents a “turning point” in determining the series’ next steps.

The publisher has already released remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4, while a remake of Code Veronica is scheduled for next year. It has also been announced that Resident Evil 0 will receive a remake in 2028, and Resident Evil 1 is under consideration. That would leave Resident Evil 5 and 6 as the main numbered games still without new versions.

In an article published in the special 30th-anniversary issue of Biohazard magazine, available in Japan, Takeuchi explained that the current series is moving forward on two fronts. According to him, Capcom has been gradually preparing for the moment when the remake line reaches the era of the numbered titles.

Elements such as Umbrella, Spencer and the return of Raccoon City in Resident Evil: Requiem are part of that preparation for a potential crossover. The idea began as a way to please fans, but the audience’s reaction led the team to explore the approach further in Resident Evil Village and Requiem.

“The current Resident Evil series is being developed on two fronts. One day, the remake series will reach the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens.”

The statement also raises questions about the future of Resident Evil 7 and the games that followed it. For Takeuchi, the seventh installment marked a major shift, as it was in development when Capcom decided to begin remaking the older titles.

Resident Evil 5 continues to attract interest following the success of the Resident Evil 4 remake, but a new version would once again have to contend with discussions surrounding its African setting and the character Sheva. Resident Evil 6, meanwhile, could get a chance to be reworked. For now, Code Veronica remains the franchise’s next remake.
