Call of Duty has generated more than US$ 40 billion in revenue to date, according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The announcement followed the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which hit stores on Friday (23) as the 23rd mainline game in the franchise.

Sharma shared the milestone in a post on X alongside a graphic showing positive reviews of Modern Warfare 4. In the caption, she called it one of the most acclaimed releases in Call of Duty’s 24-year history, congratulated the Activision team and thanked players.

The figure Sharma cited covers the entire franchise, not sales of Modern Warfare 4 alone. Her post links the milestone to the new game’s release but does not say how much the game has earned since launch. The graphic highlights critical reception; it does not provide sales figures either.

Over 24 years, the series has maintained a regular release schedule, though critics and players have responded differently to each game. The US$ 40 billion cited by the Xbox CEO reflects that full history. For anyone tracking Call of Duty’s commercial performance, the distinction matters: the announcement shows the scale of the franchise, but it does not yet reveal how Modern Warfare 4 has performed financially.

The milestone comes as Call of Duty prepares to expand into theaters. A film directed by Peter Berg is scheduled for release on June 30, 2028 and is expected to explore “the cost of war” for its characters.
