Valor Mortis is an upcoming first-person action soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. Scheduled for release on October 13, 2026, it moves away from Ghostrunner’s cyberpunk future and into an alternate version of the Napoleonic Wars. The game places its conflict in a war-ravaged Europe where history has been distorted by a mysterious plague, turning the familiar setting of Napoleon’s campaigns into a supernatural battlefield.
Players take the role of a fallen soldier from Napoleon’s Grande Armée who has been brought back from death. This resurrection is central to the game’s premise: the protagonist is not merely surviving the war, but confronting the horrific consequences of the plague and the forces connected to it. The announced setting combines early nineteenth-century military imagery with undead and monstrous threats, presenting a darker vision of Europe during the era associated with Napoleon Bonaparte.
Combat is presented from a first-person perspective and is designed around the demanding structure associated with soulslike games. Valor Mortis emphasizes close-quarters fighting, deliberate encounters, and the need to withstand dangerous enemies rather than simply overpower them. The resurrected soldier can use melee weapons as well as supernatural abilities, giving the game a combat identity that joins period-inspired warfare with powers born from its alternate-history premise.
The title’s announced world is not a straightforward historical recreation. Its version of the Napoleonic Wars uses real historical context—Napoleon’s army, European battlefields, and the period’s military atmosphere—as a foundation for a fictional plague-driven catastrophe. That distinction is important: Valor Mortis does not claim that its monsters, resurrection, or supernatural powers are historical events. Instead, it uses the era to frame a horror-infused action story about a soldier returning to a continent transformed by war and disease.
One More Level revealed Valor Mortis as a new project after establishing itself with the fast, first-person combat of Ghostrunner. While both games use a first-person viewpoint, Valor Mortis has been publicly positioned as a soulslike rather than a parkour-focused cyberpunk action game. Its announced emphasis is on brutal melee confrontations, supernatural tools, and a hostile alternate Napoleonic world.
Valor Mortis is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its October 2026 launch date places it among the studio’s future releases, and the publicly announced material identifies its key pillars clearly: first-person action, soulslike challenge, an alternate Napoleonic setting, a resurrected Grande Armée soldier, and a plague that has reshaped Europe into a battlefield filled with unnatural horrors.
