Lake is a narrative adventure game developed by Gamious and published by Whitethorn Games. It launched for PC and Xbox consoles in September 2021, later arriving on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. The game is set in 1986 in the fictional lakeside town of Providence Oaks, Oregon, and follows Meredith Weiss, a woman who has spent years building a career in software development in the city. Meredith returns to Providence Oaks after 22 years away to temporarily replace her father, Thomas, as the town’s mail carrier. Thomas needs time off, and Meredith agrees to spend two weeks delivering letters, parcels, videotapes, and other packages along the familiar roads surrounding the lake. The premise gives the player a daily routine rather than a combat or puzzle-driven objective: Meredith drives a postal van, selects delivery locations, speaks with residents, and decides how she wants to respond to their problems and invitations. Providence Oaks is populated by recurring characters whose lives gradually become clearer through the mail route. Meredith reconnects with Kay McCoy, who runs the local diner, and meets Angie, an employee at a video-rental store. The game allows Meredith to pursue a relationship with either Kay or Angie, remain unattached, or focus on friendships and family. Her decisions also shape her professional future, especially through conversations with her boss, Steve, who calls from the city and expects her to return to software work. Lake’s central conflict is not a villain or catastrophe, but Meredith’s uncertainty about what she wants after years of prioritizing her career. She can embrace the pace of Providence Oaks, return to urban professional life, or choose a more complicated middle ground. The story includes small-town concerns involving residents such as a struggling video store, an elderly couple, a lonely mechanic, and a mail-order business, all encountered through Meredith’s deliveries. The game’s setting deliberately evokes the mid-1980s through its vehicles, technology, cassette tapes, television references, and lack of smartphones. Meredith’s postal work includes physical maps, paper mail, and face-to-face interactions, reinforcing the period and the town’s isolation. Gamious later released Lake: Season’s Greetings, a prequel set during Christmas 1985. Rather than starring Meredith, the expansion follows her father, Thomas Weiss, during his own mail route in Providence Oaks. Season’s Greetings introduces new winter conditions, holiday deliveries, and additional insight into Thomas’s relationships with local residents.
