The public beta for World of Warcraft: Forever drew a number of players that surprised even Blizzard. The test, which went live this week, faced queues, disconnections and severe lag when players attempted actions such as looting items and accepting quests.Josh Greenfield, a World of Warcraft Classic developer, said the beta's figures rank among the highest he has seen during his time at the company. “The beta was... crazy. The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and nearly eight years on Classic.”- Josh GreenfieldWorld of Warcraft: Forever was announced during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony. Developed by the World of Warcraft Classic team, the MMO is billed as a “Classic Plus” experience set during World of Warcraft's first year.Tom Ellis, the game's senior producer, explained that the beta environment does not use the same infrastructure as live servers. According to him, World of Warcraft tests do not usually draw such a large player base, and the infrastructure was not prepared for that initial demand.Blizzard worked on the issues throughout the instability, and Ellis later said the beta had returned to normal. In the first hours after service was restored, players logged in without further disruption as the Classic teams continued to monitor for potential problems.Community feedback has praised the updated visuals, especially the lighting, as well as the new sound effects. Players who took part in the MMO's early years also highlighted the powerful nostalgia of returning to Azeroth in this new format.World of Warcraft: Forever will be released on November 4.
