Hinterland will produce new DLC for The Long Dark's survival mode and has delayed Blackfrost's early access launch until 2027. A small team has been reassigned to the game released nine years ago, while the sequel remains in development.

The studio plans to update the survival sandbox over the next two years. The roadmap includes bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, new features and regions cut from the final episode of the story campaign.

Two DLC expansions are also planned. The first will be released in installments, following the model used for the Tales From The Far Territory expansion. As for the second, Hinterland said only that it will be different, with details still in the early stages of development.

The change in plans comes after Blackfrost was announced as a sequel to The Long Dark, with the intention of launching in early access, as the first game did. Now, its early access launch has been pushed back to next year.

Hinterland attributed the decision to a landscape different from the one it faced when Blackfrost was unveiled. In a statement, the studio cited shifting business models, a more complex geopolitical situation, uncertainty surrounding the next generation of consoles, and players spending less time and money on new titles.

Although publishers have approached the studio about helping develop the sequel, Hinterland said it remains independent. The team said it had not found a partner genuinely motivated by what would be best for the company or its players.

The Long Dark will therefore receive a new cycle of survival-mode updates and expansions, while Blackfrost remains in production with an early access launch planned for 2027.
