Stranger Than Heaven will be RGG Studio’s first game developed exclusively for the current generation of consoles. That means leaving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind, allowing the team to focus its vision on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The game’s producer, Hiroyuki Sakamoto, confirmed the decision in an interview at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026. He said the goal was to create a completely new experience and achieve the highest level of quality the studio can deliver today.

Since the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched in 2020, RGG Studio’s games have continued to support previous-generation consoles. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, released in 2024, launched on both generations of PlayStation and Xbox. Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties dropped Xbox One support but remained available on PlayStation 4.

The team says that with Stranger Than Heaven, it didn’t have to make technical compromises to create a journey spanning several decades in early 20th-century Japan. Sakamoto explained that older limitations had restricted, among other things, the number of characters that could appear on screen at once.

With the new game, the studio was able to put more characters on screen simultaneously than in any of its previous productions and improve their visual quality. The producer also said the team achieved a richer visual experience and a stronger artistic identity than in its earlier work.

Stranger Than Heaven launches on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Sakamoto also confirmed that the game will include “cheats,” while a recent preview noted some positives despite reservations about its digital recreation of rapper Tupac Shakur.
