Resident Evil Requiem was initially planned as an online game. The revelation came from producer Masachika Kawata in the 124-page Biohazard 30th Special Mook, which brings together the series’ timeline, the genealogy of its creatures and interviews with developers.According to Kawata, game director Koshi Nakanishi began development with an online concept. A survey conducted midway through production, however, produced unfavorable results. The team decided to abandon that approach and refocus on the horror concept.“Every game is an ongoing process of trial and error,” Kawata said when discussing the project’s changes. The decision also affected the choice of protagonist. Leon was the first character confirmed for the role, but the team concluded that his emphasis on combat, especially against zombies, would push the experience too far toward action. To balance that approach, Capcom introduced Grace as a new character. Kawata explained that with Leon alone, “the horror would no longer work.” The character’s involvement was kept secret until the end to preserve the game’s full vision, which would combine horror and action elements, and to maintain the public’s interest until launch. The idea of turning Resident Evil Requiem into an online game also connects to earlier discussions within Capcom. During the conceptual phase of Resident Evil 7, executives pressured the team to consider multiplayer, downloadable content, microtransactions and an ongoing service model. In 2022, franchise producer Jun Takeuchi said the team had considered those possibilities but ruled out multiplayer because it did not have an idea they considered good. The project ultimately took the form of a single-player horror game, an approach that also prevailed in Resident Evil Requiem.
