Nerial, the studio behind Reigns and Card Shark, has announced that it is shutting down—or, in the words of its founders, entering “hibernation mode.” The decision was made together with Devolver Digital, the studio’s parent company, and brings game development by the current team to an end.CEO Tamara Alliot and creative director François Alliot announced the decision in a letter posted on social media. They said they needed a change after 13 years at the helm of Nerial. With the studio winding down, the entire team is looking for new opportunities.“Although this marks the end of Nerial as we know it, it is not the end of our work in games,” the founders said in the message. The couple also said they planned to take a break and reflect on their time running the studio before returning with a fresh perspective. In a LinkedIn post, Tamara Alliot listed the professionals affected by the decision and asked companies to consider hiring them: Oscar Harrington-Shaw, narrative and script; Helen O’Dell, art director; Neil Goodman, lead programmer; Gordon Speirs and Ben Obikoya, programmers; Neil Bull, QA lead; and AJ Kerr, senior producer.François Alliot wrote on his own profile that he plans to return to working as an independent developer. The message does not give details about what led to Nerial’s closure, but confirms that the founders intend to keep making games after their break.Founded 13 years ago, Nerial became known for Reigns, a strategy game built around swipe-based decisions, as well as Card Shark, a puzzle game set in the world of cheating at card games. The studio also developed The Crush House.
