Epic Games is using artificial intelligence to develop code and features for Unreal Engine, including Unreal Engine 6. In an interview with This Week In Video Games, Marcus Wassmer, the company’s executive vice president of development, said nearly all ongoing development takes place in workflows tied to Fortnite, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and the engine’s next numbered release. The shift is changing how engineers work. According to Wassmer, engineers no longer write most of the code; instead, they guide AI tools toward the architecture they want. He confirmed that Epic uses vibe coding, but said the company does not generate the entire engine in one go. The process involves repeated iterations to deliver features developers have requested while staying within the project’s memory, performance and scalability limits.Wassmer believes the tools could speed up updates and reduce bugs. That is his expectation, not an outcome demonstrated in the interview. The move comes amid scrutiny of generative AI’s use in the industry, including concerns about jobs, plagiarism and environmental impact. Wassmer said Epic is more concerned about the risks of moving too slowly than about skepticism toward the technology. In his view, adopting AI halfway in development would not be viable; the company intends to be open about what it does and share its practices with other developers.Epic also recently said it used vibe coding for the new version of the Epic Games Launcher, aiming to make it faster. The company has not announced a release date for Unreal Engine 6.With information from Eurogamer.
