Marty Stratton, director of DOOM, said id Software can still develop games and technology despite losing half its staff. His remarks come amid a series of cuts at Xbox aimed at reducing costs and making its operations more profitable.

The studio behind the DOOM franchise most recently released DOOM: The Dark Ages. The game was well received by players, but the significant reduction in staff has raised questions about the studio’s ability to maintain its production pace and work on new projects.

Speaking with, Stratton acknowledged the scale of the losses and said the company had prepared to preserve what it considers essential operations.

“It’s all right. Everyone knows we lost half our studio. But there was a deliberate effort to make sure we could get through this, particularly when it comes to game and technology development.”

The layoffs also affected the studio’s technical teams. Some of those let go worked on id Tech, the technology id Software uses to create its games. With fewer people, maintaining and improving the tool could become more difficult, affecting the development of future DOOM titles.

In August, company programmer Chris Hays offered a more pessimistic assessment of the impact of the cuts. In his view, making a game with half the staff would be extremely difficult.

“It’s hard to make a game like this with half the people. And by hard, I mean impossible.”

- Chris Hays

The remarks highlight a gap between management’s confidence and the concerns of technical staff. Microsoft has yet to reveal its next plans for DOOM, leaving the franchise’s future unclear as id Software works with fewer resources.
