*skate.* is the return of Electronic Arts’ skateboarding series after *Skate 3*, which was released in 2010. EA announced the project in June 2020 with a short video featuring series veterans Cuz Parry and Deran Chung. The company later made clear that the new game’s title was simply *skate.*, with a lowercase “s” and a period, rather than *Skate 4*. It is developed by Full Circle, an EA studio established to work on the series.

The game is set in San Vansterdam, a fictional city built as a shared space for skating. Its districts include Hedgemont, Gullcrest, Market Mile, and Brickswich. Instead of following the numbered games with a conventional sequel and a one-time purchase, Full Circle designed *skate.* as a free-to-play game that can receive updates over time. EA has said that access to the city will not be locked behind paid map expansions and that purchases will not provide gameplay advantages. Cosmetic items are part of its monetization plans.

A defining feature carried forward from the earlier games is Flick-It, the control system that uses directional stick movements to perform tricks. *skate.* also gives players ways to move around San Vansterdam when they are not on a board: they can get off, climb, and use parkour-style movement to reach places to skate. The Quick Drop feature lets players place objects in the world, creating or altering spots rather than relying only on the city’s fixed obstacles. These features connect the game’s skating to exploration and to the lines players devise for themselves.

Full Circle involved players before release through its skate. insider programme, inviting people to test unfinished builds and provide feedback. A 2022 development video labelled its footage “pre-pre-pre-alpha,” making its early state explicit. The studio also used its *The Board Room* videos to discuss development decisions, including the free-to-play model. That public testing and communication formed a notable part of the game’s long development after its 2020 announcement.

*skate.* entered early access on September 16, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It supports cross-play and cross-progression, so its online San Vansterdam is not divided into separate communities by platform. Its name, setting, release model, and shared-city design distinguish it from the three earlier mainline *Skate* games, while Flick-It provides a direct mechanical link to the series that began in 2007.
