Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It first launched for Sega Dreamcast in Japan in February 2000, followed by releases in North America and Europe later that year. Although its title omits a numbered sequel designation, Capcom presented it as a major continuation of the Resident Evil storyline, following the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It was notably the first series entry to use fully polygonal 3D environments rather than pre-rendered backgrounds. The story begins three months after the destruction of Raccoon City. Claire Redfield, searching for her brother Chris, infiltrates an Umbrella Corporation facility in Paris. She is captured and transported to Rockfort Island, a remote Umbrella-owned prison and training complex. Shortly after her arrival, an attack leaves the island in chaos and releases biological weapons throughout the facility. Claire escapes her cell with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside and attempts to contact Leon S. Kennedy for help. Rockfort Island is controlled by Alfred Ashford, the unstable descendant of Umbrella co-founder Edward Ashford. Alfred frequently impersonates his supposedly absent twin sister, Alexia. The Ashford family history becomes central to the game: Alexander Ashford had experimented with the Progenitor virus and created Alexia and Alfred through genetic manipulation. Alexia later developed the T-Veronica virus, a virus derived from the Progenitor virus and named after Veronica Ashford, an ancestor portrayed in the family’s history. Claire eventually reaches Umbrella’s Antarctic base, where she learns that Alexia has awakened after placing herself in cryogenic sleep for fifteen years. Alexia possesses remarkable control over the T-Veronica virus and becomes the game’s principal antagonist. Steve, infected by the virus, briefly transforms into a monster before regaining enough awareness to protect Claire. He dies after Alexia attacks him, giving the story one of its most tragic moments. Chris Redfield arrives after receiving Claire’s message and becomes playable during the latter part of the game. He reunites with Claire, confronts Albert Wesker, and continues the fight against Alexia. Wesker, presumed dead after the original Resident Evil, appears with superhuman abilities acquired through experimentation and seeks a sample of the T-Veronica virus. Chris ultimately defeats Alexia with the Linear Launcher, an experimental anti-BOW weapon. An expanded version, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, was released for PlayStation 2 in 2001 and later for GameCube. It added cinematic scenes that further emphasized Wesker’s involvement. The game was also released in high-definition form for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011.
