Phantom Blade Zero is an upcoming action role-playing game from Beijing-based S-GAME, the studio led by creator Soulframe Liang. It was revealed during Sony's May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, where its combat footage immediately distinguished it from the developer's earlier mobile releases. The project revisits S-GAME's long-running Phantom Blade universe, which began with Rainblood: Town of Death in 2010. Rather than presenting a historical China simulation, Zero uses what its makers call "kungfupunk": a dark fantasy setting that mixes traditional Chinese martial-arts imagery with unusual machinery and a decaying world. It is being built for PlayStation 5 and PC, and S-GAME has said it is designed as a single-player experience. Its central character is Soul, an elite assassin who works for a shadowy organization called the Order. The story starts after Soul is framed for the murder of the Order's patriarch. During his escape, he suffers injuries that leave him with only sixty-six days to live. His pursuit of the people responsible becomes a race against that deadline, while he confronts martial artists and secrets tied to the wider conspiracy. This premise was outlined by S-GAME alongside the announcement; it gives the game a specific dramatic clock, rather than an open-ended revenge tale. The developers have described a connected structure they call the "Phantom World," in which players move through an interlinked map and revisit locations as investigations develop. S-GAME has also said Soul can meet characters who may assist him and reveal different paths through the story. Combat is presented as deliberately fast, drawing on Chinese martial-arts choreography rather than slow, weighty exchanges. Soul uses multiple weapons, and trailers show swords, chainlike blades, and polearm-style attacks. The game emphasizes rapid combinations and directional movement, with animated transitions intended to preserve the flow of a wuxia action sequence. S-GAME has cited Chinese kung fu films as an important influence, particularly the stylized action associated with Hong Kong cinema of the 1970s and 1980s. This influences the game's dense choreography and its preference for dramatic camera work. Zero does not yet have an announced release date. S-GAME continues to present it as a premium console and PC title, separate from the earlier mobile games that carried the Phantom Blade name. For that reason, its significance lies not merely in another sequel, but in S-GAME's effort to bring its own decade-old Rainblood mythology to a larger international audience through a new action game. Its reveal gave PlayStation viewers a substantial look at this reinvention, establishing Soul's doomed investigation as the narrative core from the outset.
