Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a role-playing game operated by Jagex and released on 22 February 2013. It began as a backup of RuneScape from August 2007, restored after players voted for a version with an interface, economy, and ruleset.
The game takes place in Gielinor, a world divided into kingdoms, cities, wilderness, and distant regions. Players create adventurers without fixed classes, training skills such as Attack, Mining, Fishing, Herblore, Magic, and Runecraft while choosing their own equipment and activities.
Its quests provide the setting’s clearest narrative. “The Restless Ghost” introduces a spiritual problem near Lumbridge, while “Dragon Slayer” sends players toward Crandor and the dragon Elvarg. Later quests involve conflicts among humans, elves, dwarves, vampires, Mahjarrat, and ancient gods.
Progression is deliberately granular: each skill has levels from 1 to 99, and the maximum total level is 2,277. Reaching 99 can require extensive repeated training, but quests, minigames, diaries, and specialized methods offer alternatives to simple resource gathering alone.
Combat uses the game’s old-style tick system, in which actions resolve on server cycles. Melee, Ranged, and Magic each have distinct weapons, armor, prayers, and tactical strengths. The Grand Exchange in Varrock lets players trade many items through a market.
The Wilderness creates a player-versus-player region north of the kingdoms. Players may attack one another there, with deeper areas carrying greater combat risk. This danger contrasts with safer activities, including farming allotments, fishing spots, Slayer assignments, and cooperative boss encounters.
Important group content includes the Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood, and Tombs of Amascut raids. These encounters require teams or highly developed solo strategies, combining movement, gear choices, resource management, and mechanics that differ from ordinary monster fighting elsewhere.
OSRS is defined by its voting system. Major updates traditionally require player approval, although the thresholds and rules have changed. This arrangement has shaped additions such as quests, skills, bosses, areas, and quality-of-life features while preserving a conservative development culture.
In 2018, Jagex introduced Old School RuneScape to mobile devices, bringing the same account progression to touchscreen play. The mobile release expanded access without replacing the desktop client, and cross-platform play became a practical part of the game’s long-term audience.
Today, OSRS remains recognizable because its systems connect player choice with progression. A new player can complete Lumbridge quests, pursue Fire Cape, earn a quest cape, fight the Corporeal Beast, or join an economy shaped by thousands of independent decisions.
