Just Cause is a 2006 open-world action game developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. It debuted on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Windows, establishing the series before Just Cause 2 arrived in 2010. Its protagonist, Rico Rodriguez, is an American operative sent to San Esperito, a fictional Caribbean island nation ruled by President Salvador Mendoza. The CIA suspects Mendoza of possessing weapons of mass destruction and wants his government removed. Rico works with agency contact Tom Sheldon while cultivating alliances with the island’s rebel forces and the Rioja drug cartel. These partnerships give the campaign its political backdrop.
Rather than confining players to a sequence of enclosed levels, the game lets Rico travel across an expansive archipelago of beaches, forests, mountains, roads, and settlements. Story assignments advance the effort against Mendoza, while faction missions allow Rico to aid guerrillas or the Rioja cartel. He can also seize government installations and liberate settlements, altering control of locations around the map. Driving and piloting are integral to traversal: cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters, and airplanes all provide ways to cross San Esperito. Rico can jump between moving vehicles, deploy a parachute, and use a grappling hook to catch a ride.
Those aerial tricks distinguish the original from many contemporary open-world games. Rico can leap from an aircraft, steer his descent with a parachute, and grapple onto a passing vehicle instead of landing and stopping. The game encourages experimentation with that mobility during pursuits, firefights, and trips between missions. Its perspective is third-person, with gunplay and vehicle combat accompanying Rico’s acrobatics. San Esperito is not presented as a single city: its spread of islands gives aircraft and watercraft a practical role alongside ground transportation. The setting and the government’s military opposition make explosions, chases, and base assaults recurring parts of play.
Just Cause was Avalanche Studios’ first released game, marking the Swedish studio’s entry into large-scale sandbox design. Eidos published the original before Square Enix acquired Eidos in 2009. Its immediate sequel, Just Cause 2, returned Rico to a different fictional island setting, Panau, and expanded the grappling and parachuting mechanics associated with the series. That later continuation makes the first game’s contribution clear: it introduced Rico, Sheldon, the island coup premise, and the combination of free-roaming travel with deliberately extravagant stunts. Although later installments changed the destinations and equipment, the original San Esperito operation supplied the series’ starting point.
