Factorio is a construction and management game developed by the Czech studio Wube Software. It entered Steam Early Access in February 2016 and received its full release on August 14, 2020. The game began as an independent project by Michal “Kovarex” Kovarik, who started development in 2012 before Wube became involved. Its premise places the player as an engineer stranded on the alien planet Nauvis after a spacecraft crash. The player must survive, gather resources, research technologies, and automate production while preparing to launch a rocket into space. Although the story is sparse, the opening crash and rocket objective provide a clear progression. Most of the world is procedurally generated, but the Nauvis setting, hostile creatures called biters, and the engineer’s isolation establish its distinctive context.

Early gameplay revolves around mining iron ore, copper ore, coal, stone, and crude oil. These materials feed furnaces and assembling machines, which produce intermediate items such as electronic circuits, transport belts, inserters, and engines. Automation expands from hand crafting to belts, trains, pipes, logistic robots, and eventually circuit networks controlled by signals and programmable conditions. Research is organized into technologies that consume science packs. The player initially makes red and green science, then adds military, chemical, production, utility, and space science as the factory grows. Each pack requires its own production chain, making research a practical test of factory design rather than a separate menu.

Biters and their larger spawner nests attack pollution sources. Pollution spreads through Nauvis and can trigger retaliation, so furnaces, boilers, and drills create strategic risk as well as output. Defenses include gun turrets, laser turrets, flamethrower turrets, walls, mines, and later artillery. The Space Age expansion, released on October 21, 2024, adds space platforms, planets Vulcanus, Fulgora, Gleba, and Aquilo, and a redesigned progression.

Factorio’s signature challenge is throughput: every machine depends on balanced inputs, outputs, power, and transport capacity. Blueprints let players copy proven layouts, while construction robots and logistic networks turn large designs into repeatable projects. The game’s appeal has also produced a substantial modding community, supported by official tools and a mod portal. Major mods include Space Exploration, which adds an extensive multi-planetary campaign, and Krastorio 2, which rebalances recipes and adds technologies. Wube has continued updating the base game, and Factorio’s 2.0 release improved quality of life features including elevated rails, train interrupts, and smarter blueprint handling. These systems reward planning, iteration, and careful measurement.
