Escape the Backrooms is a cooperative survival-horror game developed and published by Fancy Games. It launched on Steam in Early Access on August 11, 2022, and is designed for one to four players. Rather than presenting a conventional combat-focused campaign, the game places players inside a series of unsettling spaces inspired by the internet’s Backrooms fiction: seemingly endless rooms, corridors, offices, tunnels, and other locations that appear familiar but behave unnaturally.
The central objective is straightforward but dangerous: explore each area, solve its environmental problems, avoid hostile entities, and locate the route onward. Players do not rely on an extensive arsenal. Survival depends primarily on observation, navigation, cooperation, and recognizing the rules of each level. This structure makes communication important, particularly because the game includes proximity voice chat. A separated player may become difficult to hear, while nearby sounds can reveal that an entity is present.
Fancy Games presents the experience from a first-person perspective and supports online cooperative play. The game’s visual design emphasizes fluorescent lighting, repetitive architecture, empty interiors, and deliberately awkward spaces. These details draw on the Backrooms concept popularized by an anonymous image and later expanded through collaborative online lore. Escape the Backrooms is not an official adaptation of one single Backrooms canon; instead, it uses recognizable ideas from that broader fictional setting while building its own playable interpretation.
Progression is organized around distinct levels rather than a traditional map connected by a continuous world. Each level introduces different spatial challenges and threats, so a strategy that works in one location may be unsafe in another. Some sections focus on finding a path through confusing layouts, while others require collecting objects, completing tasks, or responding correctly to environmental clues. The absence of a conventional mission briefing reinforces the feeling that players are learning the world by surviving it.
Its appeal comes from the tension between ordinary teamwork and irrational surroundings. Friends can divide search duties, warn one another about danger, or accidentally create more risk through noise and separation. The game therefore turns a simple premise—finding a way out—into a sequence of navigational puzzles and panic-driven decisions. Escape the Backrooms has remained notable within cooperative horror because it translates a web-born setting into a multiplayer format where the architecture, limited information, and shared voice communication are as important as the monsters.
