Donkey Kong Bananza is a 3D platform adventure released for Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, 2025. Its action starts on Ingot Isle, where Donkey Kong becomes involved in the discovery of Banandium Gems, golden, banana-shaped treasures. The premise soon moves below the island: DK travels through a vast underground world with Pauline, a young singer who initially appears as Odd Rock. Their destination is the Planet Core, because legend says reaching it can make a wish come true. DK wants bananas, while Pauline wants to return to the surface. The journey gives this unlikely pairing a clear shared focus. Opposing them is VoidCo, a mining company led by Void Kong. VoidCo’s pursuit of Banandium Gems drives the conflict, and its members include Grumpy Kong and Poppy Kong. The company’s operations have altered the underground areas that DK explores, making excavation part of both the narrative and the play. Pauline is not merely a companion in cutscenes. Her singing helps DK activate Bananza transformations, temporary forms that change his abilities. These include Kong Bananza, which emphasizes strength; Zebra Bananza, built for speed; Ostrich Bananza, which can fly; Snake Bananza, useful for routes; and Elephant Bananza, whose trunk can collect material. Bananza’s defining mechanic is destructible terrain. Donkey Kong can punch, tear away, and throw pieces of the environment, opening routes through walls, floors, and obstacles instead of relying only on predetermined paths. He can also surf on chunks of terrain and use material taken from the surroundings in combat or traversal. This system makes the underground layers more than a backdrop: players can reshape parts of them. The game also supports a second player locally as Pauline, who uses her vocal abilities to assist DK. Nintendo presented this option alongside GameShare support, allowing systems to share play in supported circumstances. Across its subterranean worlds, the game gives layers an ecosystem and presents Banandium Gems as rewards. Fossils can be found and exchanged for clothing options for DK and Pauline, while gold can be spent on items. Challenge courses test movement or destruction skills and can yield additional Gems. Bananza therefore places its famous hero in a structure unlike the side-scrolling Donkey Kong Country games: vertical descent, freeform demolition, transformations, and Pauline’s music are fundamental to its identity. It also follows Donkey Kong 64, released for Nintendo 64 in 1999, as another 3D adventure for the character.
