Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Pearl Abyss, the South Korean studio behind Black Desert Online. Its story takes place on the continent of Pywel and follows Kliff, a member of the Greymanes, a band of mercenaries. After an attack by their rivals, the Black Bears, Kliff sets out to find his scattered companions. That search draws him into conflicts extending beyond the two groups.

Pearl Abyss first announced Crimson Desert in 2019. At the time, it was presented as an online game connected to Black Desert. The project subsequently changed direction: Pearl Abyss describes it as a single-player action-adventure game rather than a Black Desert prequel. That history helps explain why its early announcement and later gameplay presentations can appear to describe different kinds of games.

Combat is central to the footage Pearl Abyss has shown. Kliff uses swords, a shield, bows, and unarmed moves, including throws and grapples. Demonstrations also show encounters built around distinctive bosses rather than only groups of ordinary enemies. Among the named opponents featured in official gameplay videos are the Reed Devil and White Horn. Their fights show Kliff dodging large attacks, closing distance, and combining weapon strikes with physical moves.

Pywel is more than a backdrop for those fights. Official trailers show settlements, wilderness, fortifications, and travel on horseback. They also show Kliff climbing and gliding to cross the landscape. The mixture of grounded mercenary skirmishes and fantastical sights is a defining feature of the game’s presentation: the same footage that shows sword fights and crowded towns also shows unusual creatures and large-scale spectacle.

Pearl Abyss is building Crimson Desert with its proprietary BlackSpace Engine. The studio has used public demonstrations and extended gameplay videos to show how the engine handles its environments, characters, and combat. Those videos provide a concrete view of its ambitions, but they are not the same as a complete account of the finished story. In particular, the full consequences of the Black Bears’ attack and Kliff’s efforts to reunite the Greymanes are details for the game itself to resolve.

What distinguishes Crimson Desert from a general fantasy adventure is this combination of a named mercenary company, its defeat and dispersal, and Kliff’s journey across Pywel. Its development history is also unusually visible: a project introduced in relation to Black Desert has been reworked into a separate, story-led game. The official footage puts that change into focus by following Kliff through exploration, travel, and elaborate boss encounters, all tied to Pearl Abyss’s specific vision of Pywel.
