Released by Frictional Games in September 2010, *Amnesia: The Dark Descent* is a first-person horror game set largely inside Castle Brennenburg in Prussia. The player controls Daniel, who awakens there with almost no memory of his recent actions. A note written by his earlier self tells him to descend into the castle and kill its owner, Baron Alexander. It also warns him that a supernatural presence called the Shadow is pursuing him. Rather than explaining these events at the outset, the game lets Daniel reconstruct them through letters, diary entries, flashbacks, and the rooms he explores.

Daniel’s trouble began when he found an ancient orb during an archaeological expedition in Algeria. After returning to Europe, he sought Alexander’s help in escaping the Shadow. Alexander persuaded him that extracting a substance called vitae from people subjected to extreme fear and pain would keep the threat at bay. As Daniel moves deeper into Brennenburg, he discovers the torture chambers and confronts his own role in Alexander’s experiments. His amnesia was deliberate: Daniel took a potion to erase memories he could no longer bear, then left himself the instruction to seek revenge.

The game gives Daniel no weapon with which to fight the creatures roaming the castle. Survival depends on hiding, fleeing, and using sound and sight to judge when it is safe to move. Darkness makes navigation difficult and harms Daniel’s sanity, but staying in the light can expose him to enemies. Oil for his lantern and tinderboxes for fixed light sources are limited, making illumination a practical choice rather than a permanent solution. Players also manipulate objects directly, opening doors, moving furniture, and solving puzzles to reach new areas. In one memorable section, Daniel must cross flooded passages while an unseen creature reacts to movement in the water.

Near the end, Daniel learns that Alexander intends to open a portal to another world. Another captive, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, offers Daniel a way to interfere with the plan, leading to different possible endings depending on the player’s actions. The game was developed using Frictional Games’ HPL 2 engine, following the studio’s earlier *Penumbra* games. A free expansion, *Amnesia: Justine*, arrived in 2011 with a separate story and a different protagonist. Later entries in the series included *Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs*, developed by The Chinese Room, and Frictional Games’ *Amnesia: Rebirth* and *Amnesia: The Bunker*.
