Untitled Goose Game is a stealth and puzzle game developed by the Australian studio House House and published by Panic. It launched on September 20, 2019, for macOS, Nintendo Switch, and Windows. The player controls a goose in a small English village, where its mischief replaces combat or a conventional heroic story. The bird explores connected locations and interferes with residents, shopkeepers, and visitors. Its central joke is that an ordinary village must cope with a remarkably persistent animal that can honk, grab objects, and escape through gaps and hiding places. This setup defines the game’s humor and its structure.
Progress is organized around handwritten task lists for distinct areas, including a garden, a high street, and a pub. Tasks require pranks and arrangements: stealing keys, making a groundskeeper wear a sunhat, getting someone to buy back their own stuff, or setting a table for tea. The goose cannot simply force every result; it must observe routines and exploit objects and distractions. Players can carry items, drag them away, hide them, and place them where villagers will react. Later, the goose takes the village’s miniature golden bell and must bring it home while people chase it. Completion unlocks additional lists.
House House was founded by Michael McMaster and Nico Disseldorp, and Untitled Goose Game was the Melbourne developer’s first commercial release. The team revealed the game in 2017, and its trailer helped establish its distinctive presentation: a stylized village, expressive character animation, and a goose whose blank stare makes its actions funnier. The game’s music uses piano pieces by Claude Debussy, performed for the game by composer Dan Golding. Rather than playing a fixed track, the piano dynamically responds to the goose’s activity, becoming more urgent during pursuits. The soundtrack approach gives acts of theft or evasion a changing musical cue.
In September 2020, House House released a free update that added cooperative play for two players. The update introduces a second goose, letting partners work through the same objectives together or disrupt each other’s plans. At the 2020 Game Developers Choice Awards, Untitled Goose Game received Game of the Year and the Audience Award. It also received the Game of the Year honor at the 23rd Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. Its success turned a modest premise into a recognizable cultural image: a goose with a task list, causing carefully designed trouble without ever needing dialogue, weapons, or a named human protagonist.
