The Legend of Dragoon is a role-playing game developed by Japan Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. Released in Japan in 1999 and in North America and Europe in 2000, it arrived late in the console's life on four CD-ROMs. The story follows Dart Feld, a swordsman returning to his destroyed hometown of Neet after pursuing the Black Monster, the being blamed for the village's destruction. His journey begins amid a war between the kingdom of Basil and Sandora forces led by Emperor Doel. Dart rescues King Albert of Basil and reunites with his friend Shana.

As conflict widens, Dart learns that he, Rose, Lavitz, Albert, Haschel, Meru, Kongol, and Miranda can wield Dragoon spirits. These magical artifacts transform chosen warriors into armored Dragoons and let them summon dragon companions in battle. Lavitz, a Basil knight, carries the Jade Dragoon Spirit until his death; Albert subsequently inherits it. Rose possesses the Dark Dragoon Spirit and initially conceals a crucial identity: she is the Black Monster whom Dart has hunted. The party later discovers that the creature's devastating attacks recur every 108 years, a cycle tied to the Moon That Never Sets and the ancient Winglies.

Combat uses turn-based commands but distinguishes itself with the Addition system. When a character attacks, timed button presses extend a sequence of strikes; successful inputs increase damage and build Spirit Points for Dragoon transformation. The game also employs a color-coded elemental relationship, with opposite elements causing additional damage. Its playable cast changes during the narrative: Lavitz is killed by Lloyd, a skilled swordsman working toward the game's larger conspiracy, and Miranda joins after Shana becomes unable to fight. Locations include the city of Lohan, the Giganto homeland of the Valley of Corrupted Gravity, and the Wingly city of Aglis.

The project was directed by Yasuyuki Hasebe, with Shuhei Yoshida serving as producer. Its visual presentation used pre-rendered backgrounds and video, while character battles used three-dimensional models. Music was composed by Dennis Martin and Takeo Miratsu. Critical reception was mixed to positive: reviewers often praised the graphics, cinematic scale, and combat additions, while some criticized the localization and conventional story elements. It nevertheless developed a devoted audience, particularly because it was an original Sony role-playing property rather than a sequel. Sony has reissued it digitally on PlayStation Network, allowing PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita owners to play it.
