Silent Hill is a survival-horror video game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and published by Konami for the PlayStation in 1999. It began the Silent Hill series and was directed by Keiichiro Toyama, whose earlier work included work on the original Clock Tower. The game follows Harry Mason, a widowed writer who travels with his adopted daughter, Cheryl, toward the resort town of Silent Hill. After swerving to avoid a figure in the road, Harry crashes his Jeep and awakens alone; Cheryl has disappeared. Harry searches the town while its ordinary streets repeatedly shift into a fog-covered, monster-filled environment and a corroded, industrial “Otherworld.” A pocket radio emits static when hostile creatures are nearby, and a flashlight helps Harry navigate dark interiors. The game uses these devices as central play mechanics rather than merely as visual details. Its camera frequently uses fixed or cinematic angles, and the PlayStation’s limited drawing distance was incorporated into the town’s heavy fog. During his search, Harry encounters police officer Cybil Bennett, who has come to investigate reports that Silent Hill has become inaccessible, and Dahlia Gillespie, a resident who cryptically directs him toward the town’s old church and hospital. Harry also meets Dr. Michael Kaufmann, director of Alchemilla Hospital, and Lisa Garland, a nurse associated with the hospital. The narrative reveals that Cheryl is connected to Alessa Gillespie, a girl severely burned in a ritual conducted by her mother, Dahlia. Alessa’s psychic power split her soul; Cheryl became one half and was adopted by Harry and his late wife, Jodie. Dahlia intends to reunite Cheryl and Alessa in order to complete a cult ritual and bring forth a god-like being. The game’s conclusion varies according to the player’s actions. Its standard endings include “Good,” “Good+,” “Bad,” and “Bad+”; a joke ending involving an alien abduction can also be unlocked. Saving Kaufmann and obtaining the red liquid called Aglaophotis affect the ending path. In the Good endings, Kaufmann uses Aglaophotis to expel the Incubus from Alessa. In the Bad endings, Harry’s apparent search is presented more ambiguously, including imagery of his body in the crashed Jeep. Akira Yamaoka composed Silent Hill’s music and sound design, beginning a long association with the franchise. The soundtrack combines industrial noise, ambient passages, and melodic pieces such as “Theme of Laura,” though that particular track became especially identified with Silent Hill 2. The first game’s influence is evident in its focus on psychological unease, obscured environments, symbolic monsters, multiple endings, and a town whose appearance reflects characters’ trauma and belief.
