Fallout is a role-playing game developed and published by Interplay Productions, released for MS-DOS and Windows in 1997. Its story begins in Vault 13, an underground shelter in post-nuclear California. The vault’s water chip fails, and the player’s character, known as the Vault Dweller, is sent into the wasteland to find a replacement before the community’s water supply runs out. This urgent mission becomes a larger investigation into the creation of super mutants and the threat posed by their leader, the Master.

The game takes place in 2161, roughly eighty years after a global nuclear war devastated the United States. Its world includes recognizable remnants of Southern California, including Shady Sands, Junktown, the Hub, Necropolis, the Brotherhood of Steel’s headquarters, and the Cathedral. The player can visit these locations in different orders, complete quests in several ways, recruit companions, trade equipment, and decide whether to cooperate with or oppose local factions. The Hub, for example, supports a caravan economy, while Necropolis is inhabited by ghouls affected by radiation.

Fallout uses an isometric viewpoint and turn-based combat. Character creation is governed by the SPECIAL system: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Skills such as Small Guns, Speech, Barter, Medicine, and Lockpick shape available actions and dialogue. Traits and tagged skills further distinguish characters, while experience points allow them to gain levels and improve abilities. The game’s choices can change quests and produce different outcomes rather than forcing every player through one fixed heroic path.

Although Fallout is often discussed as a successor to Wasteland, its direct mechanical inspiration came from the tabletop role-playing system GURPS. Interplay originally licensed GURPS from Steve Jackson Games, but the partnership ended during development after disagreements about the game’s violence and tone. The developers replaced GURPS with their own SPECIAL rules. Fallout’s retro-futuristic art direction combines 1950s American imagery with atomic-age technology, and the cheerful Vault Boy mascot contrasts sharply with slavery, mutation, drug addiction, and nuclear devastation.

The final confrontation occurs at the Cathedral, where the Master attempts to transform humanity through forced mutation. After that threat is resolved, the Vault Dweller may return to Vault 13, but the overseer can exile the protagonist because the journey has changed the community’s understanding of the outside world. This ending established Fallout’s emphasis on consequence, ambiguity, and the costs of survival, helping make the 1997 game a foundational computer role-playing experience.
