Diablo IV

Diablo IV is an action role-playing game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It launched on June 5, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with early access beginning June 1 for certain editions. Set in Blizzard’s Sanctuary, it follows the return of Lilith, Daughter of Hatred, who is summoned to the world by the cultist Vhenard. The game’s opening shows a blood ritual and establishes Lilith as the antagonist of the campaign. Players create a Wanderer, drawn into the conflict and pursue Lilith across regions: Fractured Peaks, Scosglen, Dry Steppes, Kehjistan, and Hawezar.

At launch, Diablo IV offered five classes: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer. Each has a distinct class mechanic. Barbarians use the Arsenal system to assign weapons to skills; Rogues choose among specializations including Combo Points; Druids make Spirit Boon selections; Necromancers use the Book of the Dead; and Sorcerers select Enchantments. The game uses an open world with public events, dungeons, strongholds, world bosses, and a shared online structure. Its campaign can be approached nonlinearly after the opening, as the five major regions connect through Sanctuary. The level cap at launch was 100, and the endgame included Nightmare Dungeons.

The main narrative brings the Wanderer into contact with Lorath Nair, a returning Horadrim first seen in Diablo III. Donan, another Horadrim, and Neyrelle, a young scholar, become important allies. The story also features Inarius, the angel who co-created Sanctuary with Lilith, and Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred. By the campaign’s conclusion, Neyrelle takes Mephisto’s soulstone and departs, while Lilith is defeated in the Throne of Hatred. Players gain Paragon points after level 50, using boards and glyphs to refine endgame builds. Legendary Aspects can be extracted from legendary items or unlocked through dungeons. The Occultist handles imprinting and extraction services.

Diablo IV adopted a seasonal model in which players can make seasonal characters and progress through a Battle Pass. Season of the Malignant, the first season, began on July 20, 2023, and introduced malignant hearts and the character Cormond. Season of Blood followed on October 17, 2023, centering on vampire powers and the hunter Erys. The first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, released on October 8, 2024. It adds the Nahantu region and the Spiritborn class, and continues the search for Neyrelle after her departure with Mephisto’s soulstone. Diablo IV launched with cross-platform play and cross-progression on the supported launch platforms.
