Released in 2000, Deus Ex is a first-person action-RPG developed by Ion Storm and published by Eidos Interactive. Set in a dystopian 2052, it follows JC Denton, a nanotechnologically augmented UNATCO agent investigating a terrorist crisis involving a manufactured plague called the Gray Death. The game combines shooting, exploration, dialogue, hacking, stealth, and character progression, allowing players to approach missions in substantially different ways. Warren Spector directed the project, with Harvey Smith as lead designer and Chris Norden as lead programmer. JC Denton's first assignment takes him through Liberty Island, where he confronts NSF terrorists led by Juan Lebedev and investigates the theft of Gray Death vaccine shipments. Later missions move through New York City, Paris, Hong Kong, and Area 51. The story features conspiratorial organizations including UNATCO, the Illuminati, Majestic-12, and the Tong. Its branching conversations and mission outcomes can change alliances and available objectives; Denton may cooperate with or oppose figures such as his brother Paul. The game's central fiction links biotechnology and surveillance to political control. Gray Death is distributed through contaminated food, and the Ambrosia vaccine is scarce, creating a crisis that drives the opening conflict. Denton's augmentations are selected from a limited set of nanotechnologies, including targeting, ballistic protection, and synthetic vision; choosing one option can disable another. The interface presents skills such as lockpicking, electronics, swimming, and computer use, while weapons and tools support experimentation rather than a single prescribed style. Deus Ex became notable for treating its world as a reactive simulation rather than a sequence of isolated combat arenas. Guards can respond to alarms, bodies can be moved, and many objectives permit alternative routes through vents, rooftops, locked doors, or computer terminals. The game also embeds recognizable historical references, including a United Nations presence in a damaged New York and a Hong Kong ruled by the authoritarian government of Maggie Chow. Its soundtrack, composed by Alexander Brandon, Michiko Naruke, Dan Gardopée, and Reeves Gabrels, uses adaptive electronic music to reflect locations and tension. Upon release, Deus Ex won awards, including Game of the Year honors and the 2000 Game Developers Choice Awards. Ion Storm followed it with Deus Ex: Invisible War in 2003, extending the series beyond Denton's crisis. The game remains influential because its conspiratorial plot is tied directly to player-directed problem solving and three competing distinct endings.
