Coffee Talk

Coffee Talk is a visual novel by Indonesian studio Toge Productions, where players brew drinks and hear customers’ stories in alternate Seattle.

Coffee Talk is a narrative barista game developed by Indonesia’s Toge Productions and released on January 29, 2020. Its premise places the player behind the counter of a late-night Seattle café in an alternate version of 2020, where humans live alongside elves, succubi, orcs, vampires, werewolves, and other fantasy peoples. Rather than sending the protagonist on quests, it structures most scenes around conversation and drink orders. Customers arrive after dark and disclose work, family, romance, and community pressures while the unnamed barista listens. The story’s Seattle is recognizably contemporary, with smartphones, online journalism, music, and social media, but its politics and social tensions are refracted through its supernatural population. The game’s coffee preparation interface lets players combine bases, primary ingredients, and secondary ingredients to serve beverages; orders can matter to particular scenes and endings. Players may also create latte art by manipulating milk foam on a drink’s surface. Coffee Talk does not present a single fixed success route: whether a visitor receives the drink they wanted can change later events and the information revealed in playthroughs. Its in-game social network, Tomodachill, supplies posts and character details, while the evening radio show provides another thread of Seattle commentary. These systems keep the game focused on hospitality as an active form of participation: players cannot select spoken replies freely, but their recipes and service shape responses. Its regulars include Freya, a writer trying to finish a novel; Gala, a werewolf hospital employee; Hyde, a vampire; Lua, an elf; and Baileys, a succubus. Lua and Baileys confront opposition to their relationship from Lua’s family, a conflict that makes the setting’s species differences socially consequential. Other visitors include Neil, an extraterrestrial traveler; Rachel, a singer; and Myrtle, an orc game developer. Freya writes for the fictional newspaper The Evening Whispers, giving the café’s conversations a connection to wider local stories. Coffee Talk’s presentation deliberately recalls pixel-art visual novels and Japanese coffeehouse dramas, while its soundtrack was composed by Andrew Jeremy. The game was followed by Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly, released in 2023, which returns to the café and barista. The original remains notable for treating beverage making not as a decorative minigame but as its central narrative language: espresso, tea, milk, ginger, mint, lemon, cinnamon, honey, chocolate, and other stocked ingredients become practical ways to remember a person’s needs or miss what they are asking for. Its story unfolds across successive nights.
