Riot Games publicly confirmed its long-discussed League of Legends MMO in December 2020, when Greg Street announced on Twitter that he was leading development of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game for Riot. Street was then Riot’s vice president of IP and Entertainment. His statement identified the project as an MMO but did not provide an official title, release window, platform list, playable demo, or story outline. The project was intended to use Runeterra, the setting of League of Legends. That setting itself includes regions such as Demacia, Noxus, Ionia, Piltover, Zaun, Freljord, Shurima, Targon, Bilgewater, and the Shadow Isles.
In March 2024, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill said the MMO had been “reset” and would go dark for several years. Merrill explained that the team had reassessed the project because it needed to deliver an experience unlike what players could get from existing MMOs. He wrote that Riot did not want to create “just another MMO” and would not publish more details for some time. This reset superseded the earlier version rather than representing a routine delay. Riot did not disclose the prior design’s combat system, progression structure, business model, or launch schedule. Consequently, those elements remain still publicly unverified.
Street joined Riot in 2013, after work at Blizzard Entertainment that included serving as lead systems designer on World of Warcraft. He subsequently became a public figure associated with Riot’s MMO effort. In March 2023, he announced that he was leaving Riot. Street said he would establish Fantastic Pixel Castle, an independent game studio, and that his departure did not mean the MMO was canceled. Riot named Fabrice Condominas executive producer for the project at that time. Condominas had previously worked at BioWare and EA, including on Star Wars: The Old Republic. The leadership change preceded Merrill’s later reset announcement.
Unlike Riot’s released Runeterra-based games, the MMO has not established canon through a finished product. League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, Ruined King, and Song of Nunu are released Runeterra works, not verified evidence of the MMO’s specific content. Riot also produced Arcane, an animated series set in the League of Legends universe, but it did not supply an MMO plot. The announced project remains notable chiefly for its public confirmation and its 2024 redevelopment decision. Anything beyond those disclosed facts—such as its story, gameplay systems, or eventual release—would be speculation rather than reliable fact now.
