Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle brings together two action-adventure games developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, released in 2014, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War, released in 2017. Both are set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, but their stories take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings rather than retelling either book.
Shadow of Mordor begins at the Black Gate, where Gondorian ranger Talion is executed alongside his family by servants of Sauron. A mysterious ritual binds Talion’s spirit to Celebrimbor, the Elven smith who forged the Rings of Power. Sharing one body, they seek revenge and investigate Celebrimbor’s forgotten past. The campaign introduces the Nemesis System, which records encounters with individual Uruk captains and allows enemies who defeat Talion to gain ranks, scars, new dialogue, and personal grudges. Players can exploit rivalries within Sauron’s army, dominate selected enemies, and use them to undermine the hierarchy of Mordor. The Game of the Year version adds the story expansions The Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord.
Shadow of War continues Talion and Celebrimbor’s mission after they forge a new Ring of Power. Their goal is to build an army capable of opposing Sauron, leading to campaigns across regions including Minas Ithil, Nurnen, Cirith Ungol, and Gorgoroth. The game expands the Nemesis System with recruitable followers, fortress assaults, sieges, and defensive preparations. Its story introduces the assassin Eltariel, known as the Blade of Galadriel, and explores the consequences of Celebrimbor’s ambition. The narrative also includes Shelob in an unusual role and develops the history of the Nazgûl. Post-launch content added additional campaigns, tribes, fortresses, and playable characters, including Baranor in the Desolation of Mordor expansion and Eltariel in The Blade of Galadriel.
Together, the games are notable for making procedural enemy relationships central to progression. A captain’s survival can transform a minor encounter into a recurring rivalry, while a recruited follower may betray Talion or save him during combat. The bundle therefore offers a connected, combat-focused interpretation of Middle-earth built around stealth, swordplay, ranged attacks, supernatural abilities, army management, and emergent stories rather than Tolkien’s original protagonists.
