Tennis for Two was an electronic game shown at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s annual visitors’ day in Upton, New York, in October 1958. Physicist William Higinbotham devised it while heading the laboratory’s Instrumentation Division. Rather than presenting research as a static exhibit, he wanted visitors to operate an instrument themselves. The result displayed a simplified tennis court on an oscilloscope, the type of cathode-ray display then used in laboratory electronics. The game used a Donner Model 30 analog computer to calculate the ball’s path. On the screen, a horizontal line represented the court, a short vertical line marked the net, and a bright dot served as the ball. Players stood on opposite sides and used separate control boxes. Each box had a knob for choosing the shot’s angle and a button for hitting the ball. The computer plotted a parabolic trajectory and accounted for gravity; a shot that struck the net or went beyond the court ended the rally. Higinbotham designed the game with technician Robert V. Dvorak, who helped build and assemble the equipment. Their first version was completed in roughly three weeks for the 1958 event. It was demonstrated again at Brookhaven’s 1959 visitors’ day, when it used a larger display and offered adjustments that could alter the game’s gravitational setting. Contemporary accounts and later recollections report that visitors formed lines to play it. Tennis for Two did not use a television set, a microprocessor, or stored digital program. Its analog circuitry produced the image and motion in real time. Higinbotham did not seek a patent because the project was created for a public laboratory exhibition, not as a commercial product. Brookhaven dismantled the apparatus after the demonstrations. The game is frequently cited in histories of video games because it gave two people direct interactive control over a moving screen object. Its place in such histories is sometimes discussed alongside earlier cathode-ray and computer experiments, including the 1947 Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device and the 1952 game OXO. Yet Tennis for Two was distinct in its public, two-player tennis simulation and its oscilloscope presentation. Higinbotham later became Brookhaven’s technical associate director and remained known for work in nuclear nonproliferation as well as for this unusually influential open-house exhibit. Brookhaven’s records preserve photographs and descriptions of the machine, making its design, date, personnel, and exhibition setting well documented for an early interactive game. It remains a landmark in the history of interactive play.
