Super Meat Boy is a precision platform game created by Team Meat, the partnership formed by designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes. It debuted on Xbox Live Arcade on October 20, 2010, before arriving for Windows on November 30. The game expands upon Meat Boy, a Flash game McMillen made with Jonathan McEntee and released through Newgrounds in 2008. Its central story follows the skinless red hero, Meat Boy, as he rescues his girlfriend, Bandage Girl, from the villainous Dr. Fetus. The doctor kidnaps her after each chapter, giving the game its deliberately melodramatic chase premise and animated cutscenes. Each stage is a compact room filled with saw blades, lava, collapsing platforms, missiles, and other lethal obstacles. Meat Boy can run, jump from walls, and change direction in midair, while his momentum and airborne control demand quick corrections. Death is immediate, but restarting is nearly instantaneous, encouraging repeated attempts rather than caution. Every failed run leaves a blood smear on the scenery, so successful runs often trace earlier mistakes. At the end of a cleared stage, the game replays every attempt simultaneously, turning a sequence of failures into a chaotic summary of the final route. This presentation emphasizes speed. The campaign contains themed chapters such as The Forest, The Hospital, The Salt Factory, and Hell. Finishing ordinary stages unlocks harder Dark World counterparts, which remix their environments with harsher hazards. The game also hides Warp Zones, special collections of stages presented with visual styles inspired by older games. Some Warp Zones unlock guest characters. The playable roster includes Bandage Girl, Jill from Mighty Jill Off, Ogmo from Jumper, Commander Video from the Bit.Trip series, and The Kid from I Wanna Be the Guy. These guests have distinct abilities, such as floating or double jumping, rather than merely changing appearance. Composer Danny Baranowsky wrote Super Meat Boy's soundtrack, whose tracks accompany world and its Dark World variation. The game's difficult design and respawns became central to its critical reputation, and it received the Independent Games Festival award for Excellence in Technical Achievement in 2010. Its development was documented in the 2012 film Indie Game: The Movie, alongside the work of other independent developers. By January 2012, Team Meat announced that Super Meat Boy had sold more than one million copies. Its sequel, Super Meat Boy Forever, was released in December 2020, recasting the concept as an automatically running platform game.
