Halo: Combat Evolved, released for the original Xbox on November 15, 2001, introduced players to the supersoldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. Developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios, it became the Xbox’s defining launch-era title and helped establish console first-person shooters as a major competitive and commercial force.
The story begins after the human colony world Reach falls to the alien Covenant. Master Chief and the artificial intelligence Cortana escape aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, which arrives at a mysterious ring-shaped installation called Installation 04. The structure, known as a Halo, appears to be an ancient weapon built by the Forerunners. While fighting Covenant forces across its environments, Chief discovers that the Flood, a parasitic species, is imprisoned within the ring. Releasing them threatens every living species in the galaxy, because activating Halo would eliminate the Flood’s food supply.
The game’s campaign combines military science fiction with exploration. Players battle Covenant species including Grunts, Jackals, Elites, and Hunters, while human Marines provide support during several missions. The Warthog, a heavily armed all-terrain vehicle, became one of the game’s most recognizable features, especially during the famous escape sequence in the level “The Maw.” Halo also introduced a two-weapon limit, rechargeable energy shields, and a distinctive balance between human firearms, Covenant technology, vehicles, and melee combat.
Its multiplayer mode originally supported split-screen matches and system linking between multiple Xbox consoles. Halo 2 later expanded the series online through Xbox Live, but the first game’s local multiplayer helped make it a fixture at parties, tournaments, and college gatherings. The PC version, released in 2003, brought the campaign and multiplayer to Windows and was developed by Gearbox Software.
The franchise continued with Halo 2 in 2004, Halo 3 in 2007, and later titles created under 343 Industries after Bungie separated from Microsoft. Halo 3 concluded the original trilogy’s central conflict with the Covenant and the Flood, while Halo: Reach, released in 2010, portrayed the fall of the human world that precedes the first game. The series has expanded into novels, comics, animation, and a television adaptation, but its core identity remains tied to the contrast between John-117’s disciplined military role, Cortana’s evolving intelligence, the Covenant’s religious beliefs, and the Forerunners’ devastating technology. That combination made Halo both a landmark Xbox game and a specifically recognizable science-fiction universe.
