Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a compilation of remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Rockstar Games published it on November 11, 2021, while Grove Street Games developed the remasters. The package revisits three Rockstar North games originally released between 2001 and 2004. Its debut versions arrived for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PCs. Rather than combining their narratives, the release preserves three separate campaigns, cities, protagonists, radio stations, and mission structures from the original titles.

Grand Theft Auto III follows silent criminal Claude after Catalina shoots him during a Liberty City bank robbery. He escapes police custody with explosives expert 8-Ball and works for figures including Luigi Goterelli, Joey Leone, and Donald Love while pursuing Catalina. Vice City stars Tommy Vercetti, a former Forelli family member released after fifteen years in prison. Sent to Vice City for a drug deal, Tommy loses both the money and narcotics in an ambush, then builds a criminal empire with allies such as Lance Vance and Ken Rosenberg. Its setting draws heavily on 1980s Miami, reflected in its vehicles, clothing, music, and neon-lit Ocean Beach streets.

San Andreas centers on Carl “CJ” Johnson, who returns to Los Santos in 1992 following his mother Beverly’s murder. His homecoming reunites him with Grove Street Families members Sweet, Big Smoke, and Ryder, but corrupt C.R.A.S.H. officers Frank Tenpenny and Eddie Pulaski force him into dangerous work. CJ’s story expands beyond Los Santos to the countryside, San Fierro, Las Venturas, and the desert, while examining the collapse and attempted restoration of Grove Street’s influence. The game includes activities such as driving schools, flying schools, gym training, gambling, property purchases, gang territory conflicts, and vehicle customization.

The Definitive Edition introduced visual changes including higher-resolution textures, rebuilt lighting, increased draw distances, and an Unreal Engine presentation. It also added Grand Theft Auto V-style control options, weapon and radio selection wheels, improved targeting, and updated mini-maps that allow players to set waypoints. These additions were applied while retaining the original mission scripts, voice performances, licensed-radio structure where available, and fundamental open-world progression. The trilogy’s launch received significant criticism for technical problems and altered character models, leading Rockstar to issue updates and restore the original PC versions to its launcher for purchasers.
