Spelunky is a platform game designed by Derek Yu, first released as freeware for Windows in 2008. Its central character is a spelunker exploring a dangerous underground world in search of treasure, while rescuing kidnapped damsels and surviving traps, monsters, and limited supplies. The freeware version established the game's defining structure: each expedition is assembled from rearranged rooms, so memorizing one fixed route is not enough. A run ends permanently when the explorer dies, sending the player back to the beginning rather than allowing a conventional reload of progress.

Yu later expanded the concept into Spelunky HD, a commercial remake released for Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade in 2012. The remake retained the original's four major environments, Mines, Jungle, Ice Caves, and Temple, while adding brighter pixel art, new room layouts, online leaderboards, and local multiplayer. It was subsequently released on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Windows. The HD edition is the version that made the game widely known outside its freeware origins.

An expedition begins in the Mines with four hearts and a small supply of bombs and ropes. The player can whip enemies, stun them briefly, or use objects such as rocks, arrows, and boomerangs. Bombs open alternate passages and can destroy terrain, but also trigger hazards. Ropes provide vertical access and can be placed under difficult ledges. These basic tools create deliberate choices because resources are finite and many treasures are concealed behind danger.

The four areas have distinct threats. The Mines contain snakes, bats, and arrow traps. The Jungle introduces mantraps, tiki traps, and deadly plants. The Ice Caves include slippery ground, yetis, and freezing conditions, while the Temple is filled with crush traps, fire, and Anubis-like enemies. Each stage also contains secret rooms, shops, and shortcuts whose value must be weighed against the risk of exploration.

Progression eventually leads to the Olmec at the end of the Temple. Defeating Olmec is the apparent objective of the main route, but Spelunky hides additional challenges beyond that encounter. Later areas include the Hell route and the final battle with Yama. Reaching them requires discovering secrets and fulfilling demanding conditions rather than simply collecting enough points. The game therefore treats knowledge as a form of progression. Players learn enemy behavior, trap timing, and level patterns through repeated attempts, although the exact arrangement changes every run. This tension makes each expedition feel distinct and memorable.
