Persona 4, released in Japan for PlayStation 2, is a role-playing game developed by Atlus. Set in 2011 in the rural town of Inaba, it follows a high-school student who moves in with his uncle Ryotaro Dojima and cousin Nanako while Dojima investigates a series of murders. The game combines dungeon exploration with school life, Social Links, and turn-based battles.
A mysterious television channel called the Midnight Channel appears at midnight on rainy nights. The protagonist and classmates discover that people shown there can become victims, and they enter the TV World through a large television set. Inside, they confront Shadows, manifestations of suppressed feelings. Their first major case involves Yukiko Amagi, whose family runs the Amagi Inn; rescuing her leads to her joining the investigation team as a Persona user.
The central combat system uses Personas, supernatural entities that represent archetypes and can be fused in the Velvet Room. Each party member has a distinct Persona and battle role: Yosuke Hanamura uses wind attacks, Chie Satonaka specializes in physical and ice skills, and Yukiko uses fire magic and healing. Naoto Shirogane later joins with light, dark, and almighty abilities. Social Links deepen relationships and improve Persona fusion, with several reflecting Inaba’s residents, including Dojima and Nanako.
The story explores the team’s attempt to identify the murderer while confronting personal insecurities. Important locations include Yasogami High School, the shopping district, and the town’s floodplain. The group forms the Investigation Team, and its members use the phrase “Reach Out to the Truth” as their guiding motto. The original PlayStation 2 version was released in North America in December 2008, following its Japanese release in July 2008.
An expanded version, Persona 4 Golden, was released for PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2012 and North America in 2013. Golden adds the character Marie, a new Aeon Social Link, the ski trip epilogue, and additional story scenes. It also introduced new music by composer Shoji Meguro and expanded gameplay systems. Persona 4 Golden was later ported to PC in 2020, followed by releases for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
Its adaptation also received an animated television series titled Persona 4 The Animation in 2011, while Persona 4 The Golden Animation followed in 2014. Both series were produced by A-1 Pictures, adapting the investigation, friendships, and dungeon battles from the games for television audiences.
