Roblox launched publicly in 2006, after David Baszucki and Erik Cassel developed an online platform originally called DynaBlocks for creators. Baszucki had previously founded Knowledge Revolution, whose educational software Interactive Physics helped inspire Roblox’s building and simulation focus and ambitions. Cassel served as Roblox’s cofounder and chief technology officer until his death from cancer in February 2013, aged forty-five years. Rather than presenting one fixed campaign, Roblox supplies tools, servers, scripting, and discovery systems for user created experiences across genres. Experiences are commonly built with Roblox Studio, while creators use the Lua based Luau programming language to implement gameplay and interfaces. Roblox’s physics engine, avatar system, and multiplayer networking support projects ranging from obstacle courses and roleplaying worlds to competitive shooters. The platform’s virtual currency, Robux, lets players purchase avatar items, private servers, and developer products offered inside individual experiences directly. Roblox introduced its Premium membership program after replacing Builders Club, giving subscribers monthly Robux and selected marketplace benefits for creators. Its avatar marketplace has included collaborations with brands including Nike, Gucci, and Vans, although availability varies by event and region. Roblox Corporation began trading on the New York Stock Exchange through a direct listing under ticker symbol RBLX in March 2021. The company reported that users are called daily active users, and its audience spans children, teenagers, and adults globally online. Roblox has faced scrutiny over child safety, moderation, advertising, and exploitation of young developers, prompting policy changes and public criticism. In 2023, the company announced age based communication updates, including restrictions affecting younger users and expanded parental controls for families. The Roblox Developer Exchange program allows eligible creators to convert earned Robux into cash, subject to requirements and changing rates. Major experiences include Adopt Me!, created by Uplift Games, Brookhaven, developed by Wolfpaq, and Tower of Hell, by YXCeptional Studios. Adopt Me! grew from roleplaying game about adopting babies into a trading focused experience featuring collectible pets and seasonal content. Roblox also hosts official events and developer conferences including the annual Roblox Developers Conference, commonly abbreviated as RDC for creators. The platform’s economy relies on marketplace fees, premium subscriptions, advertising, and purchases made within independently operated user experiences by players. Because Roblox content is user generated, quality, ownership, and availability can differ substantially between experiences, creators, and jurisdictions at times. Despite controversies, Roblox remains a major participatory platform where users simultaneously play, socialize, create, publish, and monetize interactive digital experiences.
