Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel is a Game Boy Color stealth-action game developed and published by Konami. It was released in Japan in 2000 as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel and arrived in North America later that year under the Metal Gear Solid name. Rather than adapting the PlayStation game directly, it tells an original story set in an alternate continuation of the MSX2 Metal Gear games. Its scenario was written and directed by Shinta Nojiri, while Hideo Kojima served as producer. The story begins seven years after Solid Snake destroyed the original Metal Gear in Outer Heaven. Snake has retired from FOXHOUND, but Colonel Roy Campbell calls him back when a terrorist organization captures Galuade, a heavily fortified base in Central Africa. The group possesses a new bipedal nuclear weapons platform, Metal Gear Gander, and demands that the world acknowledge Galuade as an independent nation. Snake infiltrates the fortress to learn who is directing the operation, rescue hostages, and stop Gander before its nuclear capability can be used. At Galuade, Snake is opposed by Black Chamber, a FOXHOUND-like unit led by the enigmatic Commander. Its operatives include Chris Jenner, a sniper who becomes important to Snake's mission; Marionette Owl, who uses concealed wires and traps; Pyro Bison, a flamethrower-equipped soldier; and Slasher Hawk, a sword-wielding fighter. The game also introduces the young intelligence officer Steve Gardner. Its plot explores the legacy of the earlier Outer Heaven incident, as well as the political consequences of military technology and the manipulation of soldiers. Ghost Babel preserves the overhead, room-by-room infiltration structure associated with Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Snake avoids patrols, hides from guards' vision cones, uses radar information, gathers key cards and equipment, and contacts support personnel through the Codec. The Game Boy Color hardware led to a compact visual style, but the game includes detailed character portraits, dramatic Codec exchanges, boss battles, and cinematic story sequences. The game also contains a substantial training component. Its VR Training mode offers numerous challenge stages centered on sneaking, weapon use, environmental hazards, and survival. Completion of the main story unlocks additional material and encourages repeat play through different difficulty settings and rankings. A link-cable multiplayer mode allows two players to compete in selected missions. Although Ghost Babel is not part of the main PlayStation-era storyline, it is often noted for translating the series' stealth systems, radio-driven storytelling, and eccentric boss design to a handheld format.
