Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch on July 26, 2019. It is the sixteenth mainline Fire Emblem title and the first series entry on Switch. The game takes place on the continent of Fódlan, whose three powers are the Adrestian Empire, the Kingdom of Faerghus, and the Leicester Alliance. At the center of the continent stands Garreg Mach Monastery, home of the Church of Seiros and its Officer’s Academy. The player controls Byleth, a former mercenary who becomes a professor at the academy. Byleth can be male or female, but the character’s name is also customizable. Early in the story, the player chooses one of three student houses: the Black Eagles, led by Edelgard von Hresvelg; the Blue Lions, led by Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd; or the Golden Deer, led by Claude von Riegan. This decision determines the cast, much of the story, and the route’s political perspective. The academy phase combines calendar management with battles. Each week, Byleth can teach students, explore the monastery, instruct individual strengths, recruit students from other houses, fish, garden, and participate in activities that improve motivation or relationships. Students can change classes through certifications, and the familiar Fire Emblem weapon triangle is replaced by a system in which weapons and magic are broadly usable, while Combat Arts, battalions, and class abilities shape specialization. Most battles use turn-based grid combat, and the Divine Pulse lets Byleth rewind limited actions after mistakes. A structural turn occurs after the Battle of Garreg Mach. The story advances five years, and Fódlan is transformed by war. The Black Eagles route can divide further: supporting Edelgard leads to the Crimson Flower campaign, while opposing her produces the Silver Snow route. The Blue Lions route is Azure Moon, and the Golden Deer route is Verdant Wind. These paths reveal different explanations of the game’s central conflict, including the Church of Seiros, the ancient Nabateans, Those Who Slither in the Dark, and the mysterious Crest system. Its expansion pass added the Cindered Shadows side story, which introduces the underground Ashen Wolves house and expands the setting beneath Garreg Mach. The game received a Nintendo Switch successor in the musou spin-off Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes in 2022, which presents alternate versions of the Three Houses conflict rather than continuing the original campaign.
