Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in Hydaelyn, chiefly on the continent of Eorzea. The original version launched in 2010, but its troubled reception led Square Enix to rebuild it under producer and director Naoki Yoshida. The relaunched game, titled A Realm Reborn, arrived in 2013. Its in-universe explanation was the Seventh Umbral Calamity, when the elder primal Bahamut devastated Eorzea after escaping Dalamud, a fallen satellite. This catastrophe allowed the development team to preserve parts of the setting while replacing the failed original release. Players begin as adventurers affiliated with one of Eorzea’s

three city-states: Gridania, Ul’dah, or Limsa Lominsa. The main scenario follows the Warrior of Light, a hero protected by the crystal Mothercrystal, Hydaelyn. Early conflicts involve the Garlean Empire, beast tribes, and summoned primals such as Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda. The narrative later expands beyond Eorzea through a succession of expansions. Heavensward sends the player to Ishgard and centers on the Dragonsong War between its people and dragonkind. Stormblood supports rebellions against Garlean rule in Ala Mhigo and Doma. Shadowbringers transports the Warrior of Light to the First, a reflected world threatened by overwhelming Light. Endwalker concludes the long-running Hydaelyn-Zodiark

storyline and takes the player to Old Sharlayan and the moon, while confronting Meteion and the Final Days. Dawntrail opens a new arc in Tural, across the western sea. Unlike many online role-playing games, Final Fantasy XIV lets one character learn every combat class and job by equipping its associated weapon. The Armoury System therefore supports changing from a gladiator to a conjurer or a crafting disciple without making an alternate character. Players can also gather resources as botanists, miners, and fishers, then create equipment and consumables as Disciples of the Hand. Its duties include dungeons, trials, raids, and alliance raids.

The game’s patch structure continually adds story quests and group encounters. A Realm Reborn’s Binding Coil of Bahamut was its original eight-player raid series, while the Crystal Tower alliance raid series later became mandatory for main scenario progression. Notable later raids include Alexander, Omega, Eden, and Pandaemonium. Final Fantasy XIV is known for its crossover events, including collaborations with Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest X, and NieR: Automata. Its music is closely associated with composer Masayoshi Soken, whose work includes “Answers,” the theme connected to the original game’s ending and A Realm Reborn. The title has also earned praise for its narrative and recovery from the 2010 failure, though Square Enix continues to operate it as a subscription game with optional cosmetic purchases.
