Final Fantasy is a role-playing game developed by Square and released in Japan for the Nintendo Family Computer on December 18, 1987. Hironobu Sakaguchi directed and designed the project, which became his final game at Square after the company’s financial difficulties inspired its title. The game was later released in North America for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990. Its success established a series that would become one of Japan’s most influential role-playing game franchises. The story follows four unnamed Warriors of Light, each carrying a darkened crystal. Their first major objective is rescuing Princess Sarah from the knight Garland, who has occupied the ruined Chaos Shrine near Cornelia. After the heroes defeat Garland, they discover that the crystals’ restoration requires travel across a world suffering from elemental disasters. The party confronts the Lich, Marilith, Kraken, and Tiamat, four fiends associated with earth, fire, water, and wind. Their journey ultimately leads to a revelation: Garland was transformed into Chaos and sent the fiends backward through time, creating a repeating cycle that the Warriors of Light must break. Unlike later entries, the original Final Fantasy uses a configurable party rather than predetermined characters with personal histories. At the beginning, players select four classes from six options: Fighter, Thief, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage, and Red Mage. The Fighter specializes in weapons and armor, while the Black Mage uses offensive spells. White Mages provide healing and support, and Red Mages combine selected abilities from both magical traditions. Characters gain experience from battles, and their class upgrades become available after the party obtains the Rat’s Tail from the Citadel of Trials. The game introduced several features that became associated with Final Fantasy, including turn-based combat, airship exploration, and a world map connecting towns, dungeons, and seas. Its music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, whose work on the game began a long relationship with the series. The English Nintendo release changed some terminology and presentation, while later ports and remakes added features, graphical improvements, and revised mechanics. Final Fantasy’s original plot is comparatively direct, but its combination of class choice, exploration, elemental mythology, and time-loop structure provided the foundation for Square’s subsequent numbered role-playing games. Its commercial performance helped secure Square’s future and made the name “Final Fantasy” an enduring part of video-game history.
