Sonic the Hedgehog is a 1991 platform game developed by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis. It was created by a team including programmer Yuji Naka, character designer Naoto Ohshima, and planner Hirokazu Yasuhara. Sega released it in North America on June 23, 1991. The game was designed to give Sega a mascot capable of competing with Nintendo's Mario. Sonic's blue color echoed Sega's corporate logo, while his speed became the central gameplay idea. Its commercial success helped establish Sonic as Sega's flagship character and turned the Mega Drive into a stronger rival in the early console market. The story is set on South Island, where the villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik captures animals and seals them inside robotic Badniks. He also seeks the island's six Chaos Emeralds. Sonic runs, jumps, and curls into a ball to destroy Badniks and free the animals. Rings function as protection: a hit scatters Sonic's rings, but he survives if he held at least one. Losing a life occurs when he is hit without rings, crushed, drowned, or falls into a bottomless area. The game displays a ten minute limit for each act, reinforcing its emphasis on rapid movement through every zone. Play proceeds through Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain Zones, each normally divided into three acts. The third act generally ends with a confrontation against Robotnik in one of his machines. Final Zone follows Scrap Brain and contains the game's last battle. Sonic can collect rings and reach a giant ring at the end of an act while carrying fifty or more rings; this sends him to a rotating Special Stage. Completing these stages awards Chaos Emeralds. Collecting all six emeralds and finishing the game produces the better ending, in which Sonic restores the animals and the emeralds. Beyond its sales impact, Sonic the Hedgehog introduced several features that became recurring parts of the series: item monitors, checkpoints marked by Star Posts, loops, springs, and a score system. Monitors can provide rings, a shield, temporary invincibility, or speed shoes. Sonic's running speed also affects his movement on slopes and through loops, although he can be stopped by obstacles and terrain. The original release did not let players save progress. It was later included in compilations and rereleased on multiple platforms. Sonic's 1991 debut led directly to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released the following year, and began a worldwide franchise.
