Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is a 2024 anthology and documentary from Digital Eclipse. It presents games made by British programmer Jeff Minter and his Llamasoft label, alongside archival material, interviews, and playable historical context. Rather than inventing a fictional campaign, it traces the period in which Minter made personal computer games for machines. Its central subjects include his fondness for arcade design, the recurring llamas and other animals in his work, and the way he adapted ideas across successive hardware generations. The collection makes its case through original software, not retrospective imitation, treating the games themselves as direct evidence. The anthology covers work dating from 1981 through 1994, a span that begins before Llamasoft became synonymous with later console releases. Among its best-known inclusions are Gridrunner, Attack of the Mutant Camels, Revenge of the Mutant Camels, and Llamatron: 2112. Gridrunner transforms the fixed shooting rhythms associated with arcade games into a home-computer design; the Mutant Camels games turn Minter's animal imagery into conspicuous science-fiction targets. Llamatron: 2112 is a multi-directional shooter whose title deliberately recalls Robotron: 2084. These are not decorative references: the anthology lets players encounter the designs and their changing forms on the platforms that defined them. Tempest 2000, released for Atari's Jaguar in 1994, is the collection's most prominent late-period game and a key part of its story. It reworks Dave Theurer's 1981 arcade game Tempest with explosive color, rapid movement, music, and Minter's own visual sensibility. The Tempest was an Atari arcade property; Minter's Jaguar game was licensed rather than an uncredited copy. The anthology therefore places an officially sanctioned remake beside the earlier works that establish Minter's long-running interest in arcade mechanics. Its documentary material includes footage and documents that explain development circumstances and preserve material around the games. Digital Eclipse frames this history. The release also makes the limits of the compilation meaningful. It is not a complete survey of every Minter project, nor does it present his career as a straight line of success. It concentrates on a selection of games and the years represented by that selection. The result is a playable record of a developer who worked across the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Atari ST, and Jaguar eras. Players can compare early games and experiments with later productions instead of reading about them. By connecting source material to emulated games, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story documents a body of work.
