Fall Guys began as Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a multiplayer party battle royale developed by Mediatonic and originally published by Devolver Digital. It launched on August 4, 2020, for PlayStation 4 and Windows through Steam. The game casts players as brightly colored beanlike contestants in a fictional television game show, competing through rapid obstacle courses and survival rounds. Its premise is deliberately light: contestants race, grab objects, dodge hazards, and try not to fall into slime or off platforms. Successful qualifiers can reach a final round and win a Crown, the game’s signature reward. Shows could begin with sixty players. Rounds are selected from several recurring types. Race stages such as Door Dash ask contestants to find workable routes, while survival games like Jump Club eliminate players who fail to stay on a moving platform. Team rounds divide the field into colored sides for objectives including scoring goals or collecting objects. Finals have included Hex-A-Gone, in which players remove collapsing hexagonal tiles by stepping on them, and Fall Mountain, a climb toward a crown. The game’s physics emphasize bumping, grabbing, and unpredictable collisions, so a crowded finish can change qualification in seconds. Mediatonic regularly added rounds, cosmetics, and seasonal themes. The title became free to play on June 21, 2022, when it was renamed simply Fall Guys and moved to Epic Games’ publishing ecosystem. That relaunch brought PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch versions, alongside the existing PlayStation and PC editions. It also introduced cross-platform matchmaking and cross-progression through Epic Games Accounts. The free-to-play version uses Show-Bucks, a premium currency, and a Fame Pass progression system; players can still earn Kudos for some cosmetic items. Purchases are chiefly cosmetic, including costumes, colors, patterns, faceplates, and celebrations. Legacy players received a Legacy Pack containing veteran rewards after. Mediatonic designed Fall Guys around short rounds and spectator friendly spectacle rather than combat. The character design was created to make large groups readable while they scramble over oversized sets. Its success prompted licensed crossover costumes and events featuring properties such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Among Us, Godzilla, and Halo. In 2023, Fall Guys Creative allowed players to build and publish their own rounds with in-game tools; those creations can appear in custom shows and discovery playlists. The game remains recognizable for its rotating obstacle courses, elimination format, and costumes that transform its beanlike contestants into licensed or original designs.
