Disney Dreamlight Valley is a life-simulation adventure game developed by Gameloft. It launched in early access on September 6, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, macOS, and later Apple Arcade. The game left early access and received its full release on December 5, 2023, although Gameloft continues to add content through updates. The story takes place in Dreamlight Valley, a once-peaceful world where Disney and Pixar characters lived together. A mysterious event called the Forgetting caused the valley’s inhabitants to lose their memories and disappear behind Night Thorns. The player’s character returns to the valley, meets Merlin, and gradually restores the village by completing quests, removing obstacles, and recovering memories. The central threat is represented by the Forgetting and the Night Thorns, while the player eventually confronts the dark force known as the Forgotten. Gameplay combines exploration, resource gathering, gardening, fishing, mining, cooking, crafting, decorating, and relationship-building. Players can invite characters to live in the valley, assign them activities, and increase friendship levels through conversations, gifts, shared tasks, and character-specific quests. Friendship rewards include clothing, furniture, motifs, and additional story scenes. The player can also customize their avatar, house, clothing, valley layout, and furniture placement. The original valley includes characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Scrooge McDuck, Merlin, WALL-E, Moana, Maui, Remy, Ariel, Ursula, and Kristoff. Each character contributes recognizable locations or mechanics: Remy supports cooking, Scrooge operates the shop, and WALL-E provides quests connected to his compacting and recycling habits. The game’s meals are based on Disney Dreamlight Valley recipes assembled from ingredients found through activities and biomes. The paid expansion A Rift in Time was released in three acts beginning in December 2023. It introduced Eternity Isle, Jafar’s plot, new biomes, and characters including Rapunzel, Gaston, and EVE. In 2024, the game added updates featuring characters such as Daisy Duck, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Another paid expansion, The Storybook Vale, began releasing in November 2024 and brought a realm inspired by Hercules, Brave, and other Disney properties. Unlike many free-to-play games, Disney Dreamlight Valley’s full release uses a purchase model, while optional premium items are sold through the in-game Premium Shop. Its appeal comes from combining a persistent, customizable village with an original crossover narrative that treats Disney characters as neighbors, quest-givers, and companions rather than merely collectibles.
