Sonic Frontiers is a 2022 action-adventure platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It launched on November 8 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game begins when Sonic, Tails, and Amy investigate the disappearance of the Chaos Emeralds above the Starfall Islands. Their aircraft is pulled into a wormhole, and Sonic reaches the islands after becoming separated from his friends. He discovers that Amy, Tails, and Knuckles have been confined in Cyber Space, a digital realm connected to ancient technology buried throughout the islands and its surviving systems. To free them, Sonic explores five large island areas, including Kronos, Ares, Chaos, Rhea, and Ouranos, collecting Portal Gears and Chaos Emeralds. Portal Gears open stages modeled as Cyber Space, where Sonic races through more linear courses to obtain Vault Keys. The keys unlock vaults holding the emeralds. With all seven, Sonic becomes Super Sonic to fight colossal Titans: Giganto, Wyvern, Knight, and later Supreme. Fishing with Big the Cat and solving environmental puzzles supplement speed-focused traversal, while rails, springs, and boost pads make the landscapes function as enormous obstacle courses rather than conventional disconnected level maps in prior games. Eggman is also stranded in Cyber Space, where he communicates with an artificial intelligence called Sage. Sage initially treats Sonic as a threat while protecting Eggman and guiding the Titans. Sonic's recovered memories reveal that the islands' Ancients had used the Chaos Emeralds and fled their destroyed world before creating advanced technology on Starfall. After Super Sonic defeats Supreme, a hostile entity known as The End attempts to use the moon as a weapon. Sonic and Sage confront it in a bullet-hell sequence, and Sage sacrifices herself to help stop it. Sage returns later, alive. Frontiers was directed by Morio Kishimoto and used the Hedgehog Engine 2. Its soundtrack includes music by Tomoya Ohtani, with the vocal song "I'm Here" performed by Merry Kirk-Holmes of To Octavia. Sega supported the game with free content updates during 2023. The third, The Final Horizon, added a new story conclusion, playable Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, revised challenges, and an alternate path on Ouranos Island. It also expanded Sage's role and culminated in Super Sonic confronting The End again. The game's open-zone format marked a major structural change from the more segmented stages of Sonic Forces, its immediate predecessor.
